Rollin' Along

from Red Thread by Rob Tunbridge

about

This song started life as "End Of The Line" and I wrote the basic idea when I was in Japan. Sayuri and I were travelling around, on the subway and we went to the end of the line, to both Nakayama and Azamino during our stay. The original chorus that I wrote, had the line: "We're heading along to the end of the line and I'm feeling just fine." And, I wrote this whilst sitting on the train going to Azamino.

When I got back to England, I found that, although I loved the idea, I couldn't actually pull the song together musically or lyrically. I kept revisiting it but nothing seemed to work. It was once I had written, what is now End Of The Line, that things moved forward. Changing the title to Rollin' Along was a real help in this.

For those that do not know, the word "gaijin" in the first verse is a Japanese term (not the nicest way of saying it) for a foreigner.

lyrics

Rollin’ Along

Took a green line train to the end of the track
To Nakayama then we’re coming back
Just another gaijin, here in Japan
As long as I’m with you, I don’t really give a damn

I’m rolling along, just rolling along
I’m rolling along, with you by my side
And I’m feeling alright.

Took a blue line train to the end of the track
To Azamino then we’re coming back
Enjoying the strangeness in this land they call Japan
As long as I’m with you I don’t really give a damn

I’m rolling along, just rolling along
Yes, I’m rolling along, with you by my side
And I’m feeling alright.

Took another train to the end of the track
Down to the coast and then we’re coming back
Walking on the beach, strolling hand in hand
As long as I’m with you I don’t really give a damn.

‘cos I’m rolling along, just rolling along
Yes, I’m rolling along, with you by my side
And I’m feeling alright.
I’m rolling along, just rolling along
Yes, I’m rolling along, with you by my side
And I’m feeling alright.
